• Kumar Mangalam Birla resigns as Vodafone Idea Executive Chairman

    Himanshu Kapania has been appointed as the Non-Executive Chairman on the recommendation of the Aditya Birla Group.

    Kumar Mangalam Birla resigns as Vodafone Idea’s Non-Executive Director. The board of directors of the company, which met on Wednesday, accepted the resignation of Kumar Mangalam Birla. Himanshu Kapania appoints as the Non-Executive Chairman on the recommendation of the Aditya Birla Group.

    Board members unanimously appointed Himanshu Kapania as Non-Executive Chairman. Himanshu Kapani has been in the telecom industry for 25 years. He has also served as a board member of various telecom companies and a board member of Global GSMA for two years. He was the Chairman of the Cellular Operators Association of India.

    Two days ago, Kumar Mangalam Birla had said that he was ready to give his entire stake in Vodafone Idea to any public sector domestic financial institution in the country. Union Finance Secretary Rajiv Gowda receives the letter from Aditya Birla Group chairman. The resignation followed.

    Birla wrote the letter on June 7. Vodafone Idea owes about Rs 1.8 lakh crore. This will include arrears due to the Center in connection with the spectrum auction. The company’s board of directors had decided to raise Rs 25,000 crore, but investors were reluctant to do so due to a lack of support from the central government.
